Finishing 3D Prints: Sanding, Gluing, and Painting - Hiding Layer Lines

Fine layer lines are 3D printing's fingerprint - some pieces wear them as a distinctive technical signature, while others (realistic figurines, refined decor, display gifts) deserve a finish that makes them look molded and polished. That's what separates an ordinary print from a professional piece.

Step one: support removal and cleanup

Overhanging and angled features print atop temporary supports that break away afterward. Proper removal takes precision flush cutters and patience - aggressive pulling leaves scars or snaps fine details. Contact points are then dressed with a small file until every trace of the support disappears.

Sanding: the secret to a smooth surface

Gradual progression is the rule: start with coarse sandpaper (220) to level visible lines, then medium (400–600), then fine (800–1200) for a silky feel. Wet sanding gives a smoother result and keeps dust down. For detail-heavy pieces, filler primer fills the micro-lines sandpaper can't reach - spray, dry, light sand, repeated until the surface turns glassy.

Assembly and painting

Large pieces print in sections and assemble: liquid super glue suits small joins on common materials, epoxy for joints bearing force. After assembly and sanding comes paint: a primer coat unifies the surface and reveals remaining flaws, then acrylics by brush for details or spray for large surfaces, and finally a protective clear coat - gloss or matte to taste.
