What Does 0.1mm Precision Mean in 3D Printing? Do You Actually Need It?

Every print service advertises precision numbers - but what do they mean in practice? A simple explanation of layer height vs dimensional accuracy, and when fine precision is worth paying for.

"0.1 mm precision" - a number repeated in every 3D printing ad. But what does it actually mean, and does your part need it? A simple understanding of precision helps you order right and pay only for what you need.

There are two kinds of precision - don't mix them up

First: layer height - printed parts are built layer upon layer, each between 0.08 and 0.3 mm thick. Thinner layers give smoother surfaces and finer detail (especially on curves and engravings) but multiply print time. Second: dimensional accuracy - how closely the finished part's measurements match the source file, which depends on printer calibration and material behavior, typically within ±0.1 to ±0.3 mm for typical parts.

When do you need high precision?

Fine engravings and Arabic script, sculpted figurines with fine features, and small detail-dense pieces - all genuinely benefit from thinner layers. Spare parts that mate with other parts (a gear entering a track, a lid snapping onto a rim) need tuned dimensional accuracy with proper clearance calculations. But a vase, a stand, a large decor panel? A 0.2 mm layer is excellent - the difference from 0.1 is only noticeable touching the surface up close, while the time and price difference is very real.

Don't reflexively ask for "maximum precision" - ask for the right precision for your part.
